Plants are the primary source of raw materials for plant based medicine since ancient times. The traditional herbal medicines are receiving great importance in the health care sector. In Indian system of medicine i.e, ayurveda, one of the plant Cuminum cyminum belonging to family Apiaceae is a grassy plant with 15-50 cm height, growing in many parts of world. In folk medicine, the fruits of this plant have been used to treat diarrhea, toothache and epilepsy. In recent years, there are some reports regarding the anti-diabetic, estrogenic activities, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti aggregatory activity of the fruit essential oil of Cuminum cyminum. The present review on Cuminum cyminum is to know its importance with respect to pharmacognosy and pharmacology in detail.
